Choosing the right heading is an important part of the overall look and feel of your curtains. The heading you choose will influence how the fabric hangs and should work comfortably with your window and the curtain rod you've selected.
When deciding on a heading, consider both the style you'd like to create and the practicalities of your window. Some heading styles are better suited to certain window types than others, so it's worth taking a moment to choose the option that works best for your space.
Slot Top
A slot top is the classic choice for café curtains. A neatly sewn pocket along the top of the curtain allows the rod or wire to pass through, creating a simple, relaxed finish that sits comfortably in both traditional and contemporary interiors.
Slot Size
The size of the slot varies depending on the design. Where a slot top is available, the product page will confirm both the slot size and the maximum rod diameter it will accommodate. When choosing your hardware, simply ensure the rod diameter does not exceed the stated maximum.

Slot Top and Bottom
A slot top and bottom heading is made in the same way as a standard slot top, with the addition of a second pocket along the bottom edge. This allows the curtain to be supported at both the top and bottom, keeping it neatly in place.
The Finished Look
Supporting the fabric at both ends creates an even, consistent gather with clean horizontal lines above and below. The curtain sits neatly against the window, giving a considered, tailored appearance that's particularly well suited to café curtains.

If you're ordering curtain rods, remember you'll need two for each curtain - one for the top and one for the bottom.
Tape Top
A tape top heading, sometimes known as a pencil pleat, uses header tape with draw cords to create the gather. The curtain is then hung using curtain hooks on rings. For café curtains, we use a narrower tape to create a lighter, more delicate finish. The tape depth for each design is shown on the product page.

Styling Your Tape Top Header
Flat
Leave the tape ungathered for a clean, contemporary finish. Simply attach the curtain hooks at even intervals along the header tape and hang the curtain from your rings to create a smooth, understated appearance.
Gathered
For a fuller, more traditional look, we recommend choosing 2x fullness. Once your curtain arrives, simply knot the draw cords before gathering the header to your preferred width, then distribute the gathers evenly for a soft, relaxed finish.
Ungathered
Order with a 2x (or more or less - your curtain, your choice) and leave the header tape ungathered. Evenly space the curtain hooks along your curtain and hang for a flat, deep wave effect giving a contemporary and relaxed look.
The final look is entirely up to you. You may prefer a lighter gather for a more understated appearance, or a fuller gather for added softness. The flexibility of a tape top heading allows you to style the curtain in a way that feels right for your window.
